Nail fungus is a problem that many people suffer from. The infection itself is caused by a fungus that can live on human skin and nails. It's common for the fungus to infect fingernails but it can also affect toenails as well. Nail Fungus can be difficult to get rid of, but there are ways you can prevent and treat it at home or at the doctor's office.

Preventing nail fungus

Nail fungus is a condition that can affect anyone. It's not as serious as it sounds, but it's still important to take care of your nails and avoid the risk of infection. Here are some tips for preventing this condition:

  • Avoid sharing nail clippers, nail files, nail polish, and remover with other people.
  • Clip your fingernails and toenails short and keep them clean. Here are some tools that you can use to maintain them.

A nail clipper that provides clean clipping and easy handling with the integrated triangle cut handle.

An Oblique nail clipper with an elongated handle provides comfort and easy handling.

A washable 4-way nail buffer that makes it easier to shape, contour, and smooth the nails. This multi-tasking buffer lays the groundwork for a perfect manicure and is also a tool for a quick fix for high-shine on the go without nail color. The extra gentle, microfiber material is easy on the nails.

  • Wash hands with soap and water after manicures.
  • Keep your nails dry to prevent them from becoming wet which can allow fungi to grow.
  • To make sure you are receiving quality nail care when visiting a salon, make sure the salon sterilizes its instruments after each use, or bring your own to ensure sanitation.

Treatment of nail fungus

Treatment of nail fungus can be difficult. In some cases, infections of the skin under the nails can easily be mistaken for nail fungus, so make sure that you have a doctor diagnose your symptoms before buying anything. The first step to treating this is to find out what type of fungus you have and this can be done by a dermatologist, podiatrist, or other healthcare professional. Once you know what type of fungus you have, it will be easier to treat it.

Here are some products that can help protect and cure nails from fungus:

This is developed for supportive care in conjunction with therapy for nail fungus. Its active ingredients provide intensive care to protect and stabilize fungus-sensitive nails and support the regeneration process. In addition, it changes the nail environment to counteract microbial damage.
*How to use: For optimal care of fungus-sensitive nails, apply Podoexpert Repair Nail Tincture by Allpremed twice daily (mornings and evenings) or as needed in conjunction with therapy for nail fungus. For external use only. Shake the bottle well before using it and hold it upright when applying.

An anti-fungal spray that combats and fights fungal infections that have infected your toenails. It contains Clotrimazole 1% formula to help prevent nail fungus and is an effective anti-fungal agent that is proven to provide preventative care for unsightly toenails prone to fungal infections. The tincture can also be used between the toes for peeling skin. The tincture contains avocado oil and Panthenol to restore a healthy sheen to toenails.
*How to use: Hold the bottle about 1” away and spray on toenails prone to fungal infections or on peeling skin between toes. Shake well before each use.

This product kills skin fungus that causes fungal nails and is infused with 5 fungus fighting ingredients to eliminate peeling, redness, burning, and other symptoms associated with fungal skin infections.
*How to use: Wash the affected skin with soap and water and allow it to fully dry. Apply a thin layer of the product over the affected area twice a day (morning and night) or as directed by a physician.

For an Athlete’s Foot, pay special attention to the spaces in between toes. Allow 5 minutes for the product to absorb into the skin. It is recommended to wear well-fitting, ventilated shoes, and change socks at least once a day.

For Athlete’s Foot and Ringworm, use the product for 4 weeks. For Jock Itch, use the product for 2 weeks. Even when symptoms are not visible, continue to apply the product to ensure fungus growth has stopped

If the skin around the nails is dry and the nails are cracked and broken, Gehwol med Nail and Skin Protection Oil is ideal. Besides protecting against fungal infections with Clotrimazole, they offer a rich treatment of Wheat germ oil, panthenol, and Bisabolol to care for the skin and the nails. Brittle and fragile nails regain elasticity and beauty and receive a natural silky sheen. The liquid state of GEHWOL Nail and Skin Protection Oil penetrates particularly easily even in areas like the nail fold and soaks into the skin easily. Dermatologically tested.
*How to use: Massage GEHWOL Med Protective Nail and Skin Cream twice a day into the area surrounding the nail until only a slight residue is left.

Some may not respond to these kinds of topical treatments. In that case, it is best to consult a physician for them to check what other treatments are available and the best way to treat your nail fungus.

Here are some other treatment options:

  • Laser treatment: A doctor may use a laser to kill off the fungus in your nails. It's a semi-permanent treatment that can take several months to work, but it works well for larger infections.
  • Surgery: A doctor may need to remove part or all of your nail bed if it's badly damaged by fungus. This is done mainly by dermatologists and podiatrists who specialize in treating fungal infections under the nails, which are called onychomycosis (or "nail fungus"). You might need surgery if other treatments don't work or they make your condition worse because they irritate your skin too much.

Conclusion

Nail fungus starts harmlessly, but can spread fast if action isn't taken. If it's something you feel could be affecting you or your nails, take the time to get a diagnosis and treatment. While it may not be serious, it can still cause some problems. The best way to get rid of it is to treat it right away.
