Acne is one of the most troublesome and common skin care problems for people around the world - and emotionally one of the most debilitating and embarrassing skin disorders to experience. Although most often associated with teenagers and the onset of puberty, the truth is that you can get acne at any age, which makes it even more frustrating.

No, pimples are not part of some conspiracy to ruin your life, and yes, there is something you can do to get rid of them!

All About Acne

Anatomy of a Zit

Everyone is familiar with acne, even if we don't know the specifics of what makes it acne. Acne's textbook definition is that it's a skin disorder that occurs when hair follicles (every pore on your face is actually part of a follicle) become plugged with dead skin cells and oil. That mixture of oil and cells allows the bacteria responsible for acne, Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes), to flourish inside the follicle instead of remaining on skin's surface, where it normally resides without causing much trouble.

How Breakouts Happen

When the sebum and other clogged materials are exposed to the air, they turn black (a process called oxidation). Bacteria can grow in the blocked pores and produce an inflammation, otherwise known as a zit. If there are pimples, blackheads, and whiteheads, but no deep cysts, it's called superficial acne or acne vulgaris. If the pimples project down into the skin, and there are cysts filled with pus, it's called deeper acne. If not treated right away, it can leave scars if not treated properly.

Change your life - Change your face

Let's get really real: all the acne-fighting products in the world won't completely solve your problem unless you work on the cause of it -stress and your health. Make some time for yourself, try deep breathing or yoga, whatever you can to keep those stress hormones down.

Also, other lifestyle factors like lack of sleep, poor nutrition, dehydration, and smoking can have a huge impact on your skin. So ensure that your getting eight hours a night and your eight glasses of water a day.

Also, limit your caffeine consumption - while it keeps you going through the day, it also keeps your body in a stressed-out state. Try eating healthy snacks like nuts and complex carbs to keep your energy levels up instead.

Steps To Solve Acne

STEP 1: Cleanse Correctly

Use a foam, gel, or oil cleanser that detoxifies and refreshes your skin.

Cleansing correctly is the first step to getting clear skin. Choose a cleanser that is gentle and will not disrupt your skin's natural barrier

Effective cleansers remove dirt, oil, and impurities that clog pores - Stopping acne before it can start and treating active acne.

Use the cleanser twice a day and work it around your face for at least 60 seconds.

STEP 2: Exfoliate Gently

Acne-prone skin sheds 4X the amount of dead skin cells as regular skin, and that dead skin clogs pores. But, reaching for a harsh scrub can actually make things worse.

These high-tech tools are designed specifically to give you a deep cleanse and exfoliate your skin without over-exfoliating.

By exfoliating using these cleansing tools, you are allowing your skin to have better absorption of the other products in your skin care regimen.

STEP 3: Treat Spots

Keep a spot treatment on hand to fight any zits that do pop up. Look for one with 5 percent benzoyl peroxide, sulfur, or zinc oxide.

You can apply a spot treatment as soon as you see signs of blemish appear. A spot treatment will clear up the pimple faster than popping it (Please Don't Pop It!) and will save you from nasty scars!

STEP 4: Get a Mini Peel

Safely remove the outer layer of dead skin cells on the surface of your skin, and allow fresh new skin to the surface.

These at-home treatments help lighten discoloration of the skin, such as sun spots or age spots and help those with acne-prone and blackhead-prone skin.
