I just got a new curling iron for Christmas. It has an inch and a half barrel and heats up to about 450 degrees.
I've been testing it out and though the curls look nice when I first do them, they fall out within an hour. So, I was wondering if there are any tips to get curls to last longer. Currently this is what I do:
I start with clean hair then add some mousse to it for volume and then right before I wrap a section of hair, I apply a small amount of gel.
After I let the curls cool without touching them and once I'm done I spray all of my hair with hair spray. I don't know what else to try. Any tips? |

Grrrr! That iron is to thick for what you are trying to get out of it. So here are some tips for you that may help. Invest in a working spray or "setting spray." Taking one inch sections you agoing to spray the hair before curling it. Then either with pin curl clips or bobbi pins you are going to roll the curls with you finger and pin them. when you have finished pining all your curls let them set for about 5mins. This will let the curl lock its shape. then after 5 mins take out and seperate the curls with you finger and twirl them around your finger in the direction the curl is going for a more defined look and not grade 8 birthday party hair. Then give it a good blast with FINISHING spray! all done! |

| Thanks for the advice Rocky. I was wondering, is there anything that this size (1 1/2 inches) would be good for? |

| The larger barrel is good to get some shape and bounce into the hair. It would be a good way to finish a blow out. |

| I've been looking at youtube videos and I've seen a few girls managing to get the curls that I want with a 1 1/2 inch barrel. I can get my hair to curl, it just won't stay in. I haven't tried the bobbi pin tip as yet. I'm going to buy a firm hold hair spray and use the bobbi pins and hope for good things! |

| Hey MBC, have you tried washing your hair the night before and let your hair 'accumulate' or 'gather' natural oil overnight and then curl your hair? I have really fine hair and I find that I can't really do anything with my hair when it's squeaky clean, but when my hair is oilier, I can shape and style my hair a lot more. Hope this helps! |

| You can also lightly defuse you hair then spiral curl it for a fun look. Works well on fine limp hair. |

I usually try curling my hair the day after I wash it. I also find that my hair doesn't style very well right after it's been washed.
I haven't tried curling since the last time I posted but I'll try a different hair spray as well as the diffuser trick.

if you have fine hair you want a smalleer curling iron, if you have coarser hair, you could use the 1.5" curling iron.
I asked my stylist to give me a body wave with sponges and now my curls last all day using the large 1.5" curling iron. I know the curls you are talking about as that is what a lot celebrities has at the moment. |

Btw, I use very little hairspray in my hair because I dont like my hair to feel crunchy, but the body wave works really well. |

| Yeah, I've realized that there's no way my hair will hold a curl with a 1.5 inch barrel. It sucks because I just got this iron for Christmas and I really like it. |

Bumble and bumble Styling Lotion works great- just spray and then curl- you can even comb out after and it WILL stay!
